No, it’s not Grizzly Bear Division

Look, everyone in a 10 block radius knows that I dig Grizzly Bear. One of my favorite bands of all time. Or at least the past year or so. That being said, I do appreciate new music. Surprise I know but really. I dig it. So with that being said I present some new music. Today’s selections for your dancing and dining pleasure come from Jonquil. Jonquil hails from Britain as do most good bands. Right? I mean, really, who ever heard of a band from Oklahoma City or Brooklyn? I mean, really. Enjoy.
Night Time Story – A relaxing trollop through the fields of verdant waving stalks of goodness and joy. Seriously.

What the hell was that? Division

Sometimes you just kind of have to scratch your head, shrug and say, “Right on”
60 Minute Man – The Dominos
When you think of the The Dominos, you don’t necessarily think of anything dirty. You might because of that time in Lawrence, but we won’t go there. This song is totally dirty without being dirty in any way. Listen. Dig.

The Sounds Of The Suburbs – The Members
Most of us are suburban. Theme song? Maybe, maybe not. Great old 70′s/80′s kind of new wave/punk deal.

The Queen Is Dead* Division (*mostly)

as a side note we should probably change the title from “f’ing great song of the day” to “f’ing great song of whenever I get off my butt” but the acronym would be too long to really use. FGSOWIGOMB” just really doesn’t flow.
With apologies to Jose Maldanado on Indie 1031.
The Queen Is Dead – The Smiths
Prior to going to Dallas once to see an old girlfriend and some other friends, I bought this tape on a whim to listen to in my cool walkman type cassette deal. I literally wore this tape out, and a few other copies before I could afford a cd player. Even though I fancied myself as some kind of hepster cool cat who dug the latest sounds (or whatever the kids were saying then. 23 skidoo probably) I hadn’t really found The Smiths or really anything beyond hepster classic How Soon Is Now.

How Soon Is Now – The Smiths
Look I know you’ve heard it. Everyone has. Twice. Maybe three times. You know what? That’s fine. Listen to it again. It’s worth it. If you ask me it’s the classic alternative song. Whatever alternative is. I know it’s not Van Halen or Guns N Roses or whatever. It was good then. It’s good now.

Big Mouth Strikes Again – The Smiths
While The Queen Is Dead may or may not be the most well known Smiths song from this album, Big Mouth Strikes Again is my favorite. When I first heard this song I kind of wet my pants. Of course that may be because I’d had like 903 beers on a plane from Kansas City to Dallas, but I digress. Something about the newness, the difference, the power? of this song worked for me. Still does.

80′s songs that you may or may not have heard but it doesn’t matter because they f’ing rock Division

Whisper Tames The Lion - Drivin n Cryin
Sometimes it’s okay to take a chance on something. Like a different ice cream flavor, maybe a shirt or maybe even a spouse. You can always, if you don’t like it, chalk it up to experience and move on. I’m talking ice cream here, not spouses. Drivin N Cryin is the ice cream chance you took that is tasty and delicious. Like licorice ice cream, it’s not for everyone but if you’ve got the cajones to try it, you’ll dig it.
Suggested Volume: 11
Suggested Drink: Miller High Life, Moonshine

The Fanatic - Felony
Remember when you wore dark sunglasses in the club at night? They went well with your skinny legged jeans and the cheap suit jacket that you got at the thrift store. You were cool though because you had the shades. It showed that you were a bit mysterious, definitely cool and maybe, just maybe there was a hint of danger in the air. This is the song that you danced to. In a cool kind of detached way.
Suggested Volume: 9 – Loud but it’s not that club that you used to dance at. Let’s tone it down one notch.
Suggested Drink: Vodka, Fuzzy Navel

Making It Work – Doug & The Slugs
Sure you’re a serious person. We totally get it. Totally. Sure, we know you have your fun side. Really. Every now and then a person has to kind of let go, have fun. We get it. We’re there. A lot. This is the song for you, the extremely serious, dedicated, FOCUSED person. Totally focused. Really, we understand. We admire you. No, really we do. We wish we could be just like you. Nooooo….really. We mean it. Say, could you turn that song up a bit? Thanks.
Suggested Volume: 8
Suggested Drink: Rum & Coke, Spritzer
