Earlier this year my then favorite internet station went off the air. If you’ve read anything here, you know what fan I was of WOXY. Followed them for years, it was sad when they went off the air the first time. I remember taking the laptop into the bedroom and listening late into the night when they went off the air. Seemed a big deal to me. Then they came back. Internet only, but what did I care? I listened on the internet only anyway, so…yeah…
Then the internet station went off the air. After moving everyone from Ohio to Austin, they shut down. Sad, but honestly, not unexpected.
Now, come to find out, Mike Taylor, the former PD and DJ for WOXY has started a blog called The Big Beat. It’s my new favorite music blog. Dig it. Click here.

WOXY went silent today. Again.
I am sad. Again.
Music is important to me and good music is even more important. I strongly feel that WOXY has, over the years, provided the best resource for good music on air or on-line.
I forget exactly how I came to find WOXY, looking for something on line I’m sure. Years ago. I became hooked and when I could hook the stereo up to the computer and listen in the house and not just on the laptop, I was king. At least of my wee duchy.
When WOXY went off the air terrestrial, I was listening on-line. I recorded it. I’ve still go those discs somewhere. It was a seminal moment to me. I felt like I’d lost a major portion of my life, something that I relied upon for comfort, for pleasure, for news, for reassurance that things were okay. Everything was cool.
Then they went off and I searched for something, found a few alternatives but nothing stuck.
Then they came back. By god WOXY was back on the air and all was right with the world and the world has continued to be right.
Then today, they go off the air again. Lack of funding apparently.
Of late, I’ve not been so involved with WOXY but it’s always been my anchor. My safety net. We got rid of satellite because with the iPhone app for WOXY, we just didn’t need satellite. We had WOXY whenever we needed it. There was nothing cooler to me than driving down the road, in Kansas City, mind you and digging radio from Ohio or Austin of late and knowing all was right with the world. I might stray a bit but I always came back.
I can’t now.
Best of luck to all involved with WOXY and thank you.

When you think of crazy cities in America several cities come to mind first. New Orleans with Mardi Gras and the general all the time party attitude, San Francisco because hey…it’s San Francisco right? New York because apparently you can go there and pretty much get or do whatever you want as long as you don’t hassle the locals. In Austin you’ve got a bunch of damn unwashed long hair hippie freaks (I soooooo want to go to Austin and be a long haired hippie freak), Vegas because everyone there has lost every penny they have and then won it back gambling in the bathroom of the Burger King. But Kansas City? Really? I wouldn’t say we’re crazy. More like fucking boring, rednecky, pickup driving hicks. But crazy? Apparently, much to my surprise we are the 23rd craziest city in America.
I’m so proud.
