Sonic Spectrum on 96.5 The Buzz and Present Magazine – Robert Moore is my hero. The long standing host of Sonic Spectrum, Robert speaks to the people of Kansas City who don’t necessarily think that Green Day counts as alternative. If you were to ask Robert he might cop to an unholy love of Eleni Mandell, but that’s okay. It was a sad day when Robert left KCUR or KCUR left Robert. Whatever the case, it was very, very cool to hear Sonic Spectrum again.
McDonalds Coffee - Yes, McDonalds. Hey, look monkey boy, I like starbucks just as much if not more than the next hepster, but facts are facts and I’m broke. Not like scrounging for pennies in the bathroom that are all green and god knows what’s on them broke, but broke enough that a week’s worth of starbucks adds up. I drink a lot of coffee in the morning and the last cup from mcdado’s takes me into the office and lasts until mid morning. Then it’s a switch to heroin and yoplait yogurt mixed with drano and jolt cola.
Diners, Drive In’s and Dives – This may be my most guilty of pleasures . I’m not really sure even why I like this. It’s not like this guy has boobs like Giada or is goofy sweet like Rachel Ray, but for some reason this show calms me, soothes me and takes me away for a while. My brain doesn’t have to work, I don’t have to think about squat. It’s tv at it’s escapism finest.
We all have those movies that we like that we’re really not supposed to like or that maybe aren’t really that good but we watch them anyway. I’m no different from most. At least in this respect. Below are three of my old school favorites.
Singles (1992) – Cameron Crowe, Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillion, Kyra Sedgwick, Bill Pullman…a veritable list of stars…okay make that kind of stars…but still it’s a list right? It’s the story of a bunch of people in Seattle in the 90′s. They hang out a coffee shop and clubs, meet, date, etc. That’s pretty much it. This is a time and place movie for me. I liked the time and place I was at when it came out.
The Quiet Man (1952) – John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, etc. Look I know it’s cheesy. But damnit, this may be my favorite movie of all time. It’s like the cinematic equivalent of macaroni and cheese. It’s good, it’s comforting and you know it’s there when ever there’s nothing else. If you don’t know, it’s the story of an American boxer who accidentally kills a guy in the ring and goes to his ancestral home in Ireland to get away. Of course, he meets a hot Irish lass and wants to marry her. The brother has to be tricked into allowing it. They get married, but she doesn’t get her fortune. The brother and John Wayne have a classic fight, get drunk and all is well.
Independence Day (1997) – Everyone has seen this. It’s aliens, the end of the world, space ships, Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum steal a ship and go to the mother ship and load a virus to their computer, then they shot a missile into the control room of the mother ship. It blows up, they go home and all the alien ships get blowed up real good.
